Before Fame

He began playing music at age nine, starting on the piano. He attended the University of Minnesota and the McNally Smith College of Music.

In 2013, he began working with the group Vulfpeck. He has recorded on every one of its albums since.

His grandparents immigrated to the United States from China in the 1940s.
